Kyanite is a beautiful mineral found most commonly found in vivid hues of blue with a silvery shimmer to the surface. It is commonly mined in Brazil, Netherlands and India, each with its own unique properties. Kyanite has an unusual hardness characteristic; lengthwise the hardness ranges from 4-5 but across the blade the hardness increases to 6-7 making it difficult to cut and polish. However the Kyanite from India has a hardness of 6-7 in both directions making it perfect to polish into wands or freeforms like this one. The surface of the stone shimmers in chatoyant blues. Hold the stone up to the light to illuminate the deep blue bands of color.
